PHOENIX (AP) _ A man arrested for allegedly pointing a loaded AR-15 rifle toward a woman and her teenage daughter inside Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport says his firearm was never pointed at anyone.

Peter Nathan Steinmetz said at a news conference that the safety on the rifle was engaged at all times and he's an educated and responsible gun owner.

The 54-year-old Tempe man says he was just trying to make a political statement by bringing the AR-15 to the airport on July 25.

Steinmetz was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of one count of disorderly conduct with a weapon before bonding out.

Steinmetz says he was never aware of anyone in the airport being disturbed in any way. He says he has no plans to repeat the demonstration.
