Mom Wins Lottery While Escaping Hurricane Irma

A mom of three named Tiffany Hatfield won the lottery while fleeing her home in Ocoee as Hurricane Irma approached. While making the 700-mile drive to safety with family in Virginia, Tiffany told People magazine that they stopped for a bathroom break and she bought two $5 Diamond Dazzler tickets.

“We were rushing because it took us awhile to find a store,” Tiffany shared. “But while my daughter was in the bathroom, I bought two lotto tickets.”

“After I put my daughter back in the car, I stood outside and scratched the ticket,” Hatfield recalled. “On the first ticket I didn’t win anything, but on the second, the very first number I scratched matched for a thousand dollars — then I kept scratching and they kept matching.”

Tiffany ended up winning $10,000!

“I thought I was seeing it wrong,” she said. “I never bought a lottery ticket in North Carolina, and I thought there was no way the first time I buy one, I would win.”
