Since June when the Trailer for Wreck It Ralph 2 came out, there has been a lot of criticism going on about Princess Tiana and her skin color.
When the trailer for the animated film first came out in June, many were especially excited by footage teasing a reunion of 14 Disney princesses, in CGI form. The royal roster includes Snow White, Cinderella, Pocahontas, Ariel, Mulan, Jasmine, Aurora, Belle, Elsa, Anna, Rapunzel, Moana, Merida, and Tiana—why they don't include Atlantis's Princess Kida, IDEK.
Tiana's appearance appeared to have been edited—compared to her 'original' appearance (well, aside from when she was a frog), she had lighter skin, lighter hazel eyes, and curls closer to Brave's princess Merida's messy 'do than what her natural hair would actually look like.
“Disney’s decision to restore Princess Tiana’s image to that of an unapologetically Black princess with full lips, dark skin and dark hair in Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 is a victory for Color Of Change members, Black children and their parents, and Black audiences who want to see the variety of shades, shapes and sizes of Black characters accurately represented in the arts.”
It looks like Disney has listened to the criticism and will do what they can to fix it. Do you think it's a big deal or do you think they should have just left it?
Big news. Because of COC members and convos with @DisneyAnimation, Princess Tiana has been restored to her original depiction. Now when Black girls watch #WreckItRalph2, they’ll see Tiana and other princess of color that actually looks like them on screen #BlackGirlMagic pic.twitter.com/4ZPJm4aZyz— Rashad Robinson (@rashadrobinson) September 20, 2018
