One of the remedies your mom used to have for tummy aches was ginger ale because ginger ale is known to soothe your tummy. Apparently, ginger ale makes things worse according to Delish!
"I think the myth comes from the name of the beverage,” says Gina Sam, M.D., a gastroenterologist in New York City; "People assume if it has ginger in the name, it'll likely help their stomachs."
Think about it this way - there is a whole lot more sugar in ginger ale than ginger which is why you feel sicker!
"The reason we say to avoid sugar when you're fighting a stomach illness is because sugar actually feeds the bad bacteria in your GI tract, causing more bloating, gas, and indigestion," says Dr. Sam.
When you feel sick, try something like Gatorade or clear liquids, even crackers but stay away from ginger ale!
