When you talk to your pup, do you ever wonder just how much they understand you? Well, one study set out to find just that.
Seems the average dog understands 89 words and phrases -- and some really smart dogs know more than 200 words, according to research out of Canada. According to the study, the most responsive dog breeds are Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, German Shepherd, Bichon Frise, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and Chihuahua. The dogs that understand the fewest words and phrases include the Beagle and Boxer.
While the researchers say the typical dog shows they “know” around 100 words, they caution that responding to a word doesn’t necessarily mean they truly understand its meaning. It’s possible dogs simply know to associate certain human sounds with specific events that follow those words.
