Farm gives away free potatoes so they won’t go to waste amid pandemic

A farm in Idaho announced this week that they are giving away huge amounts of potatoes for free during a lack of demand due to the coronavirus pandemic. With restaurants closing down a lot of farms including Cranney Farms are being left with a huge amount of food with nowhere to send it.

“FREE POTATOES - We started dumping potatoes today as we have no home for them because of this Covid 19 disaster. The potato supply chain has definitely been turned up side down,” Ryan Cranney, CEO of the farm, wrote in a post. “If you would like a few bags come on by. 1300 South 700 West Oakley, Idaho.”

The farm has been in business for about 113 years and usually send their potatoes to the food service industry to become french fries , according to KTVB-TV.

“All the way from the upscale restaurants to the family sit-downs, diners. Stuff like that,” Cranney told the station. “That’s just taking a total beating. Food service numbers are down, restaurant business down maybe 80 to 85% in some places.”

After the post went up they had about 20-30 cars show up at a time. They weren’t just getting food for their own families but also their friends and others they knew that were impacted by the pandemic.
